Astonishing! When we launched this blog, the goal was to help the average PC owner get the most out of their computer. According to a survey that TuneUp recently worked on with Harris Interactive, our hunch that users could benefit from some tips and tricks was right. Let’s dive into some of the interesting trends we discovered!*
Many home PC users purchased a new computer as a result of slow speed or poor performance, but very few understand the advantages of utility software and basic maintenance steps that can be taken to improve their systems.
An alarming 77% of home PC users are either not using or are not sure if they are using utility software!
The majority of home PC users have tried to improve their computers’ performance by:
- scanning for viruses (90%)
- defragmenting their hard disks (76%)
- removing software or files to free up space (77%).
However, about one-third of these consumers (34%) have tried to speed up their systems by running utility software, which could have postponed the need to replace their computer in the first place.
Approximately 38% of home PC users, who have ever upgraded their system, typically did so after only four years or less.
How long do you think a home PC should last? According to the survey, 56% of home PC users think their computers should last five years or more before it becomes outdated, causing the need to upgrade to a newer system.
Overall, consumer PC buying and maintenance habits seem to be a bit misguided! The TuneUp Blog team sees a real need to educate home computer users on Windows optimization and PC maintenance.
*Harris Interactive® fielded this study on behalf of TuneUp via its QuickQuerySM online omnibus service, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,010 U.S. adult computer users ages 18+, of which 1,908 were PC users. Data for questions related to online use or behaviors were weighted specifically to the respective “online” populations. No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated; a full methodology is available.
